Peer Mentor Training
We employ peer mentors in the OSU STEM Leaders program for several reasons. First, the peer mentors are close in age to the mentees and, in many cases, will have had similar experiences or will at least be aware of challenges the mentees are facing in their first year at OSU. Consequently, peer mentors are in a good position to help mentees get through difficult experiences and lead them on a path that will result not only in their success, but in their excelling. Second, by being closer in age and experience to mentees, peer mentors are likely to be role models who can develop relationships with mentees that will help foster trust and lead to better ways of dealing with problems. Third, advice coming from peer mentors is likely to be heard differently by mentees than that coming from program non-student staff, leading to more effective communications.
